Meshtastic
An open-source, off-grid communication platform that uses inexpensive LoRa radios to create long-range mesh networks, no internet or cellular service required.
What is Meshtastic?
Meshtastic is an open-source mesh networking platform where every device participates in relaying messages. By default, each radio acts as a CLIENT that actively rebroadcasts messages it receives, creating an ad-hoc network that works without any fixed infrastructure.
It uses inexpensive LoRa radio transceivers to create long-range data networks that work entirely off-grid, no internet or cellular service required. Meshtastic is ideal for roaming groups, mapping, and rich telemetry, with minimal setup and no required infrastructure.
How It Works
- Every device rebroadcasts messages by default, forming a “managed flood” network
- Direct messages use next-hop routing for efficiency
- Default hop limit of 3 (max 7) keeps the network manageable
- Encrypted messaging, GPS location sharing, and telemetry built in
- Open-source software and hardware with a large community
- Low power consumption for extended battery life
Best For
- Hiking and outdoor adventures where everyone carries a radio
- Emergency communications with minimal setup
- Mapping and GPS tracking across a group
- Community networks that grow organically
- IoT and sensor applications
